Tutorial: How to backup your WordPress website

Backing up your WordPress database and files should be a task that is carried out on a daily, weekly or monthly basis, depending on the type of website you own.  E-commerce sites should be backed up daily, whereas blogs could probably get away with backing up on a monthly basis.

In order to backup your WordPress site, we suggest you follow best practices and use at least two solutions. One of those solutions should be Nifty Backups.

Step 1: Install Nifty Backups

Download and install Nifty Backups by going into your wp-admin section, clicking on plugins -> add new, and then search for Nifty Backups. Install and activate the plugin. You will be taken to the Nifty Backups Dashboard page.

Step 2: Backup both your database and your files

Nifty Backups is set up by default  to backup both your database and all your files. Click the “Backup now” button in the top right corner.

Step 3: Store the backup files offsite (IMPORTANT)

When the backup is complete, you will have the option of either downloading the backup files (one ZIP file for the database backup and one ZIP file for the file backup), or emailing the backup files to yourself. Please note though that only backup files under 20mb may be emailed.

It is important to keep the backup files both onsite and offsite. This means that you should always have at least one other copy of your backup files on another server, or safely stored somewhere on your computer. We suggest that you store the backup files on your website (by default), on your computer, and on at least two other services such as a FTP server, Google Drive or Dropbox. You can use the Pro version of Nifty Backups to automatically stream your backup files to these services as and when the backup completes.

Step 4: Create a backup schedule

If you have the pro version of Nifty Backups, make sure you set up a backup schedule to ensure your backups are automatically handled every day, week or month.

Step 5: Use another offsite service to backup your database

It is best practice to use multiple backup solutions to backup your important information. Consider using another offsite backup service to create another backup of your website.
